The Nations Championship is new in 2026. The four Rugby Championship nations plus Fiji and Japan form the southern pool, and the Six Nations teams form the northern pool. Each side plays every team from the other pool once — southern teams host in July and tour in November — before a finals weekend in London, where each team meets the side that finished in the same position in the other pool.

The 2022 draw was one of the most dramatic finishes in the fixture, England recovering from 25–6 down to draw 25–25. Their other win in the last decade came in the 2019 World Cup semi-final in Japan.
The Hillary Shield
The Hillary Shield is named after the New Zealand mountaineer and explorer Sir Edmund Hillary, and it was first contested at Twickenham in 2008. The holder keeps the trophy after a draw, as New Zealand did in 2022.
New Zealand have won most Hillary Shield matches, but England have taken it twice: with a 38–21 win at Twickenham in 2012 and again in November 2025. That means the All Blacks must win on 21 November to reclaim it, because a draw would leave the shield with England.
What decided England 33, All Blacks 19 in 2025
New Zealand started well at Twickenham on 15 November 2025, with early tries from Leicester Fainga’anuku and hooker Codie Taylor. England then took control through George Ford’s kicking, with two drop goals before half-time and a long-range kicking game that turned the field position in England’s favour.
England pulled clear with tries from Ollie Lawrence, Sam Underhill, Fraser Dingwall and Tom Roebuck, with New Zealand’s only second-half reply coming from Will Jordan. The result ended New Zealand’s hopes of a Grand Slam tour — beating all four home nations — and handed England the Hillary Shield.
A new All Blacks coach for the rematch
The 2026 test will be the first between these teams under Dave Rennie, whom New Zealand Rugby appointed as All Blacks head coach on 4 March 2026, on a contract that runs to the end of the 2027 World Cup. He replaced Scott Robertson, who departed early in 2026 after an end-of-season review of a 2025 campaign that included defeats to Argentina, South Africa and England.
