Super Rugby 2025 final: Crusaders 16, Chiefs 12

The final was played at Apollo Projects Stadium in Christchurch in front of a sold-out crowd of 17,000. The Chiefs scored the first try through George Dyer, and Shaun Stevenson’s try just before half-time cut the Crusaders’ lead to 13–12.

The only points after the break came from the boot. Hooker Codie Taylor scored the Crusaders’ try, and Rivez Reihana kicked 11 points, including the penalty that settled a tight second half.

According to Super Rugby Pacific, the win was the Crusaders’ 32nd consecutive finals victory at home. It was also a third straight losing final for the Chiefs, who had lost to the Crusaders in 2023 and to the Blues, 41–10 at Eden Park, in 2024.

Super Rugby 2025 final table

The Chiefs finished first in the regular season, two points clear of the Crusaders, with both teams winning 11 of their 14 games. Four points were awarded for a win, two for a draw, plus bonus points for scoring three more tries than the opposition or losing by seven points or fewer.

The Blues, the 2024 champions, finished sixth and took the last finals place. At the other end, the Highlanders won three games but collected seven losing bonus points, which kept them level on 20 points with the Fijian Drua.

How the 2025 Super Rugby finals played out

Six teams made the finals, and the qualifying finals were played on 6–7 June. The Blues produced the upset of the season in Hamilton, beating the top-seeded Chiefs 20–19 with a winner in the 83rd minute.

Under the 2025 rules, the highest-ranked losing qualifier went through to the semi-finals, so the Chiefs survived their defeat and still hosted the Brumbies. Home teams won five of the six finals games; the Blues’ win in Hamilton was the only exception.

That “lucky loser” route was tightened for 2026. The highest-ranked losing team now drops to fourth seed and plays its semi-final away, which is exactly what happened to the Blues a year later.

The 2025 numbers that stood out

Chiefs first five-eighth Damian McKenzie was the competition’s top points scorer with 209. RugbyPass noted he finished almost 100 points clear of the next-best tally.

Western Force flanker Carlo Tizzano led the try-scoring list with 13. Force say that was the most tries ever scored by a forward in a Super Rugby season, as well as a club record, and he was named Super Rugby Pacific Player of the Year at Rugby Australia’s awards.

The regular season had 77 games, with 11 teams playing 14 matches each across 16 rounds. Adding the six finals games, 83 matches were played in total.

What the 2025 season meant for 2026

The Crusaders’ title did not carry over. In 2026 they lost 49–12 to the Chiefs in a semi-final in Hamilton, and the Hurricanes finished top of the table before beating the Chiefs 60–5 in the final. That was the Chiefs’ fourth defeat in four consecutive finals.

The 2026 season was also Moana Pasifika’s last. After a 2025 campaign in which they won six games and finished seventh, the club announced in April 2026 that it would disband, so Super Rugby Pacific will have 10 teams in 2027. The draw and dates are covered on our Super Rugby fixtures page.

Using past seasons when you bet

A season record like this is useful context for betting, but it is not a prediction. The 2025 finals showed how much home advantage counted, yet the Blues still won as outsiders in Hamilton, and the Chiefs topped the table without winning the title.
