The 2026 NRL finals run over four weekends, from Friday 11 September to the grand final on Sunday 4 October. For New Zealand fans it is the most promising finals series in years: the Warriors finished second on 42 points, level with minor premiers Penrith, and open their campaign with a home qualifying final against the Dolphins at Go Media Stadium.

How the NRL finals system works
The NRL uses a top-eight system built around one idea: finishing in the top four buys you a second chance. Here is how the four weeks connect.
- Week one: 1st plays 4th and 2nd plays 3rd in qualifying finals. 5th plays 8th and 6th plays 7th in elimination finals.
- Week two: the two qualifying-final winners rest. The two qualifying-final losers play the two elimination-final winners in semi-finals. Losers are out.
- Week three: each qualifying-final winner plays a semi-final winner in the preliminary finals.
- Week four: the preliminary-final winners meet in the grand final.
The pairings are fixed rather than re-seeded. The loser of the 1 v 4 qualifying final meets the winner of the 5 v 8 elimination final, and the loser of the 2 v 3 qualifying final meets the winner of the 6 v 7 elimination final. The preliminary finals then cross over: each qualifying-final winner plays the semi-final winner from the other half of the draw, so teams that met in week one cannot meet again before the grand final.
The Warriors’ two routes to the grand final
Beat the Dolphins on Saturday and the Warriors skip week two, then play a preliminary final against the winner of the semi-final between the Panthers v Roosters loser and the Sharks v Cowboys winner. Qualifying-final winners are rewarded with home preliminary finals under the NRL system, although the league can shift a match to a larger venue.
Lose, and the season is not over. As a qualifying-final loser, the Warriors would host a semi-final against the winner of Rabbitohs v Knights the following weekend — the same route they took in 2023 — and a win there puts them into a preliminary final against the winner of Panthers v Roosters.
The club has reached two grand finals, in 2002 and 2011, and lost both. That history is part of why this year’s second-place finish has generated so much interest on both sides of the Tasman.

Grand final 2026: date, venue and NZ time
The 2026 NRL grand final is on Sunday 4 October at Accor Stadium in Sydney, with kick-off scheduled for 7:30pm Sydney time. That is 9:30pm in New Zealand. The NRLW grand final is earlier the same afternoon, at 4pm Sydney time, which is 6pm in New Zealand.
Grand final weekend has a time-zone quirk. New Zealand moves to daylight time on Sunday 27 September, and New South Wales does the same early on the morning of the grand final. What the recent history says
Penrith arrive chasing a fifth title in six seasons after winning four in a row from 2021 to 2024. Brisbane ended that run in 2025, beating Melbourne 26–22 in the grand final, and then fell to 14th this year — a reminder of how quickly a premiership side can drop away. The Dolphins, who only entered the competition in 2023, won their last seven regular-season games to finish third.
A few patterns hold up well in NRL finals and are worth knowing before you read any preview:
- The week off for qualifying-final winners is an advantage in freshness, but it can cost rhythm. Teams coming through the semi-finals have had momentum as well as fatigue.
- Points differential across a season is a better guide to underlying quality than the win-loss record. On that measure Penrith and the Warriors were well clear of the rest in 2026.

Finals week brings two kinds of market. Match markets — head to head, line and totals — are priced for a single game. The premiership, or outright, market prices each team’s chance of winning the whole series, and it moves every weekend as results come in.
Outright prices look generous on teams that have to win more games. A team starting in an elimination final needs four straight wins; a qualifying-final winner needs two.
